Why Networx3 drug and alcohol test our staff – the business case.
Networx3’s staff is used to working for sensitive, high-security and critical infrastructure clients nationwide.
To ensure that employees who work on those contracts are fit, well and safe the company runs random drug and alcohol testing across the workforce, as part of its robust health and safety policy.
Networx3 works with drug and alcohol screening experts DAS who visit Networx3 headquarters regularly to conduct random tests on staff – from administrators to directors.
A breathalyser is used for alcohol screening and a urine test for drug testing.
A total of 14 different prescription and illegal drugs are detectable with results available on the spot.
Networx3 founder and managing director Ian Ashworth said: “Health and safety is a big deal at Networx3, it’s a core value and part of our culture, so we’ve always done drug and alcohol testing across the company even though we’re not legally obliged to do so.
“We work in a lot of high security environments. We can’t have a member of staff who is abusing alcohol or drugs going into those workplaces and being exposed to the risk of smuggling or bribery because of their habit.
“Having staff in the workplace who are affected by alcohol or drugs has an impact on performance and productivity, increases absenteeism and impacts badly on morale but it could also have an impact on safety.
“If we had a member of staff, who was impaired by alcohol or drugs, doing data cable installation or a fibre network repair they are a danger to themselves and others. If something goes badly wrong as a result, all the Networx3 directors could be prosecuted for corporate manslaughter.
“We care about the welfare of our staff. We want to do it although we’re not obligated to.”
