Our engineers at Networx3 have delivered many Cat6 and Cat6a cable installation projects.

From new installs to upgrading existing Cat5 networks, our team have the knowledge to deliver on your requirements. However, this higher performance does introduce a number of new challenges that must be considered when planning a Cat6a network setup.

At Networx3 we ensure top of the line services by only using engineers employed directly by the company, who are trained in house to our specific standards, with security clearance up to DV standards, and when on site use only our own equipment to ensure accuracy and quality.

We back this approach with accreditations and qualifications from ISO having attained 9001, 14001 and 18001, and are CHAS Registered.

What is Cat6 Cable?

Available since 2002 for higher demand networks, Cat6 cable is a twisted pair ethernet cable used for LANs.

It is backwards compatible with Cat5 cable, but offers improved performance

Cat6a Cable Fitting Considerations

Cat6 wiring operates at higher frequencies than Cat5 ethernet cable alternatives. This allows for faster data transfer, but it does increase the chances of crosstalk if not installed correctly. A common mistake we see many businesses make is through the use of cable ties. This creates two problems. Firstly, the tie can actually damage the wire creating a kink that can never be straightened out. This damage creates local impedance, reducing the Cat6a wires performance.

Another issue during Cat6 cable installation is the proximity. Neat is not always best when installing Cat6 ethernet cables as bunched together cables increase alien crosstalk and reduce performance.

Failures also occur when a cable is inserted into the wall or floor box. Without proper planning, many cables are kinked, crushed, over-bent or stretched during this final part of the installation creating long term damage that adds to the degradation of a line and reduces its operational efficiency.

Is Cat6a much better than Cat6?

In 2009 improvements were made to Cat6 resulting in Cat6a (the ‘a’ standing for augmented).

Improvements of Cat6a include:

  • Rated at higher frequency from Cat6 250MHz, to Cat6a’s 500Mhz
  • Reduced crosstalk (NEXT & FEXT) – noise on the line

Why use Cat6?

If you are looking to upgrade an existing network, or install a new one, it’s important you utilise the right cabling solution in the right location. The best way to do this is to speak to a specialist installer like Networx3 during the planning phase of any project. The most common reasons for using Cat6a cabling over Cat5 alternatives, however, include:

  • Increased performance
  • Backwards compatible with older Cat5 networks

Still unsure what you need?

It’s always our recommendation to speak to a specialist in cat6 cable installation (like us) to ensure you get the right solution, as data usage, location, access, budget and timeframe all play a role in deciding what cabling solution is best for you, from Cat5 and Cat6 to Fibre.

Networx3 are Security Cleared Engineers : All of our engineers have either SC or DV security clearance.
